What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue Massage is used to treat musculoskeletal issues such as sports injuries and strains by realigning the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues.

What can I expect when I have a Deep Tissue Massage?

The Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) applies firm pressure by using using the palm of their hands, fingers and sometimes their elbows or forearms, depending on the amount of pressure required.  This will vary depending on the individual, reason for the massage and how deep they need the pressure.

Side Effects or Discomforts of Deep Tissue Massage?

Due to the amount of pressure required for Deep Tissue Massage, you may experience muscle soreness in the area that was treated.  This is normal as this is a physical response to the inflammation as your body heals and should subside within a day or two.

You may experience cold-like symptoms because this type of massage helps to speed up lymphatic drainage and may trigger the release of toxins in your body.


Who should avoid Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep Tissue massage is typically considered safe for most patients. 

If you have the following, please speak to your primary healthcare provider before booking this type of treatment:

  • Blood clot disorder or deep vein thrombosis
  • Taking blood thinners
  • Bleeding disorders - e.g. hemophilia
  • Bone fractures or diseases - e.g. osteoporosis
  • Nerve injury
  • Recent surgery
  • Have cancer or undergoing cancer treatments - e.g. chemotherapy
  • Open wounds or skin conditions
  • Lymphedema, etc.

Some benefits of Deep Tissue Massage include, but not limited to:

Ways to Relieve Side Effects or Discomfort?

Deep Tissue massage is typically considered safe for most patients. Remember to communicate with the RMT, especially if you feel the pressure is too much for you to handle so they can adjust the amount of pressure.

Some examples to help relieve side effects or discomfort:

  • Drink lots of water before and after your massage.  This helps to flush the toxins in your bloodstream that are released from the massage.
  • Gentle stretches help enhance the massage benefits.
  • Heat or cold therapy, e.g. heating/ice pad, warm bath, sauna, etc., helps your body promote relaxation and helps enhance the massage benefits.

Before your Treatment

Deep Tissue massage is generally safe and effective, the use of firm pressure may not be beneficial for some patients. People with a blood clotting disorder, nerve injury, any recent surgery or chemotherapy, skin conditions, or patients that are taking blood thinners are not suitable candidates for this treatment.

During your Treatment

Our Registered Massage therapist warms the treated area before applying any further pressure. You will be asked to relax and breathe deeply during the session, especially when our therapist begins with a deeper pressure on the treated area. You may experience discomfort and mild pain as the procedure progresses, we recommend that you communicate any unbearable pain that does not feel well within your comfort range.

After Care

The number of sessions may vary depending on your condition and the area treated. Our specialist can recommend additional treatments or exercises to alleviate your condition and achieve the best possible results. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and do some gentle stretches to help enhance the massage benefits.
